The most beautiful Czech? Karel Gott People consider King Charles IV the greatest Czech, yet the Golden Nightingale leads the appearance charts. Who should be the winner of the Best Czech contests organized by Czech television? Unambiguously Charles IV. At least this is the opinion of 18% of people who responded to the STEM/MARK opinion poll agency in charge of the television competition. The medieval ruler is closely followed by the first Czechoslovak President T. G. Masaryk (16%), Johan Amos Comenius, Václav Havel and Jun Hus. A total number of 1004 respondents answered the question. Unlike during the TV final, the agency also made inquiries about other Czech ‘bests’ to learn that of all 227 personas suggested it is Karel Gott who looks the best. He and Jaromír Jágr also lead the richest Czechs top list. "It turned out that people are quite conservative. We expected Jára Cimrman to score a better place in our poll (he ended the 8th)," said its author Petr Zvára with reference to the fact that the TV contest winner is the fictitious figure of Jára Cimrman created by playwrights Zdeněk Svěrák and Ladislav Smoljak. And what does the Golden Nightingale himself think about people placing him so high? "My being in the top ten would be bombastic," said Karel Gott to the MF DNES daily, adding that he is truly pleased about his primacy as the best looking Czech. In his opinion, the TV poll results will be ‘a window into the minds of the Czechs’. When asked to whom he would give his vote, the singer said that such a decision is not easy. "Perhaps, I’d divide the contest into several categories as it is in TýTý, the most popular television personas of the year contest: living personas, people famous at home and abroad, or in different walks of life," noted Gott. He gave a smile when commenting on his third position in the Sense of humor category. "I’ve always leered at the career as an entertainer. For instance, I hold in high esteem Marek Eben who can tell jokes with an absolutely cool face," said the singer.
Czech Television will announce the winner on June 11.
